The answer

The Prophet (peace be upon him) forbade a father from supplicating against his child, or against himself, or his wealth, or his servants. He explained this by fearing that it might coincide with a moment of acceptance, and the supplication would then be answered. Some scholars are of the opinion that the disliked supplication refers to praying for death or similar things, and it is considered disliked when there is a need for it, such as for discipline; otherwise, it is not permissible without a need. As for seeking the child's intercession, reward, and entry into Paradise, he might attain something better if the child's life were prolonged and he prayed for his parents; for when a person dies, his deeds cease except for three: ongoing charity, knowledge from which benefit is derived, or a righteous child who prays for him, because these are deeds whose reward is renewed for the deceased due to him being the cause of them.
