Is it permissible for a Muslim to pray for death before his parents?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

Supplicating for death is permissible for a religious benefit, such as fearing apostasy (fitna) in religion or yearning for Allah and His Messenger. It is disliked otherwise. It is better for a Muslim to supplicate with the reported supplication: "O Allah, keep me alive as long as life is better for me, and cause me to die when death is better for me." And to supplicate that Allah chooses for him and his parents the best of this world and the Hereafter.
