The answer

It is not permissible to imprison an animal and leave it without food or drink until it dies. A woman entered Hellfire because of a cat she tied up and did not feed. Therefore, what the man advised the questioner's grandfather to do was not permissible, and the questioner should supplicate extensively for his grandfather's forgiveness. Furthermore, the grandfather must guarantee compensation for the donkeys to their owners if they were not his property. This is a debt that must be settled from his estate. If he has no estate, his children or grandchildren should settle it on his behalf, unless the owner forgives it.
