What is the right of the man who undertook our upbringing and treated us kindly, and is he considered to be in the position of parents or more, knowing that our parents abandoned us?
What was mentioned about parents abandoning their children is very strange, for children are a trust with parents, and they will be questioned about them before Allah; Allah Almighty says: "Allah instructs you concerning your children." They are entrusted, and either they fulfill that trust or they squander it. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Each of you is a shepherd, and each of you is responsible for his flock." The Prophet warned against a shepherd neglecting his flock and forbade him from Paradise; for the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "There is no servant whom Allah entrusts with a flock, and he dies on the day he dies while he was deceitful to his flock, but Allah will forbid Paradise for him."
The man who cared for you has done well, and his favor should be remembered and rewarded with prayers and by conveying good to him. It is obligatory to honor parents and treat them kindly, even if they have wronged; for Allah Almighty says: "And We have enjoined upon man [care] for his parents. His mother carried him with hardship upon hardship, and his weaning is in two years. Be grateful to Me and to your parents; to Me is the [final] destination. But if they endeavor to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them, but accompany them in [this] world with appropriate kindness." Righteous people should be assigned to remind the parents of this trust they have squandered, and that its consequence is regret.
