What is the ruling on a person's feeling of imagining himself to be religious and a memorizer of the Quran, praising himself, awaiting people's praise, and considering this to be hypocrisy and a mere "garment of religion" (i.e., a superficial display), and what is its remedy?

If you are religious and practice the virtues mentioned, then what people say about you will not harm you. Rather, it is an immediate glad tiding for the believer. However, do not rely on their praise, and know that praise and blame belong to Allah alone.

But if what was mentioned is merely imagination and you do not possess these qualities, then you must strive against your soul to acquire virtues and abandon vices, seeking Allah's pleasure, not people's praise, because deeds are not accepted unless they are sincerely for Allah Almighty. You must occupy yourself with beneficial knowledge and righteous deeds, and be mindful of your thoughts, so you only think about what benefits you.
