What is the response to one who considers it permissible to have more than four free wives—up to ninety-nine—as long as the husband is just, based on the argument that the limitation of the number in the verse "two, three, or four" does not negate an increase, similar to the wings of angels, and who contends that the jurists' statement limiting polygyny to four is specific to the Prophet without evidence, and cites the hadith, "until one man becomes the guardian of fifty women"?

It is not permissible for someone who does not know the Arabic language, the Sunnah, and the consensus of scholars to speak about the interpretation of the Quran. The noble verse (An-Nisa/3) indicates that the maximum number of wives a man is permitted to marry is four. Scholars understood this from several perspectives, including: that the verse did not mention more than four; that mentioning a number, if not for restriction, would be nonsensical; and that the verse was revealed as a favor, so if an increase were permissible, it would have been mentioned. The Prophetic Sunnah confirmed this ruling. The Prophet, peace be upon him, ordered Ghaylan ibn Salamah to choose four women from the ten he had when he embraced Islam. The people of knowledge have unanimously agreed that marrying more than four wives is not permissible for anyone after the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, and that the Prophet's marriage to more than four was a special characteristic unique to him. As for the verse (Fatir/1), it does not contradict this, as it speaks about the wings of angels, which can increase and decrease, and this differs from the rulings on marriage. And the hadith ("Women will become numerous and men will become few, so that for fifty women there will be only one guardian") does not indicate the permissibility of exceeding four wives. It describes the tribulations of the End of Times and does not permit the fornication mentioned therein. The term "guardian" (al-qayyem) is not limited to the husband but includes whoever takes care of a woman's affairs and interests.
