What is the origin of creatures: existence or non-existence?

The default state of creation is non-existence, and its existence requires a cause. Death was mentioned before life in the Qur’an because the original state of things is non-existence. Likewise, man was created from nothingness, as stated in the Noble Verse: "Does not man remember that We created him before, when he was nothing?"
