The question

The answer

If the wife delays the missed fasts without a valid excuse, she must pay an expiatory meal for a poor person for each day, in addition to making up the fasts. However, if she was ignorant of the impermissibility of the delay, no expiation is required of her. The expiation may be given to one poor person or several poor persons.

If she intends by her make-up fasts to compensate for what she missed in the second year, she is not obligated to pay expiation for delaying the make-up fasts of the second year. She is, however, obligated to give out thirty mudd (measures) for delaying the make-up fasts of the first month.

If she intends to make up what she owes from the first year, then she has delayed making up the fasts of the second year, and an additional fifteen mudd are required of her.

However, if she makes a general intention without specifying which year's fasts she is making up, it may be directed to the first year, as making up those fasts takes precedence. In this case, she would owe forty-five mudd.

If she delays making up the fasts due to a valid excuse, nothing is required of her, and she must hasten to make up the remaining days.
