What is the ruling on divorcing one's wife three times under different circumstances, knowing that he did not desire to divorce her on any of those occasions, and how can he atone for that?

A divorce that occurs during a state of anger is valid, unless the anger was so severe that it deprived the divorcer of his awareness and intent, such that he did not know what he was saying or did not intend it; in this case, the divorce does not occur. If the anger did not reach this level, then the divorce is valid, and the wife becomes irrevocably divorced (baynunah kubra). She does not become lawful for him again unless she marries another man willingly and he divorces her or dies. The questioner is advised to fear Allah and refrain from uttering divorce, due to its negative effects on the family.
