Is it reprehensible to supplicate for affliction, so that one may endure it with patience, and would such a supplication be answered?

A Muslim may supplicate with whatever they wish, but it is preferable to focus on the narrated supplications (Du'as). One should avoid the supplication "O Allah, make me among those who are patient in affliction," because it is a request for the causes of affliction. It is better to always ask Allah for well-being, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, used to ask for it and insist upon it. He forbade wishing to encounter the enemy and affliction, and commanded asking for well-being. The virtue of patience in affliction comes after its occurrence, not by seeking it initially.
