What is the relationship between an event and a man's righteousness such that one may be optimistic about him, or say, "Your face is a face of good fortune; ever since you came, my trade has increased"? And can a person be considered a cause for the existence of goodness and growth such that optimism is permissible?

Seeing a righteous person or a beautiful face is not a cause for good, but one feels optimistic and has good expectations from Allah, just as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was optimistic about good names. The difference between optimism (fa'l) and ill omen (ṭiyarah) is that optimism is having good expectations from Allah, while an ill omen is relying on other than Him. It has been authentically reported that the deceased rejoices at the sight of someone with a beautiful face and a pleasant scent visiting them in the grave, and that is their righteous deeds. A good word, or seeing a righteous person or a beautiful face, has no effect on causing anything to happen, but one feels optimistic in their presence, out of good expectations from their Lord.
