What motivates showing off, and what are the reasons and causes of showing off that scholars have enumerated?

The cure for hypocrisy lies in realizing its grave harm in this world and the hereafter, understanding that people's satisfaction is an unattainable goal, that their praise is of no benefit, and their censure causes no harm, and that Allah alone is the Provider. The practical treatment involves accustoming oneself to concealing acts of worship and persevering in this until it becomes a natural behavior.
