How can we rid ourselves of showing off, especially during prayer?

Hypocrisy (Riyaa’) is a dangerous spiritual disease that nullifies good deeds and incurs Allah’s wrath. To overcome it, the following is recommended:

1. Understanding the Consequences of Hypocrisy: Knowing that it leads to disgrace and humiliation in this world and the hereafter, and that Allah exposes the hypocrite before all creation. 2. Realizing the Impossibility of Pleasing Everyone: Directing one's efforts to pleasing Allah alone, for pleasing people is an unattainable goal and may incur Allah's wrath. 3. Knowing the True Nature of People: That they are slaves whose praise brings no benefit and whose blame causes no harm, and that only Allah's praise beautifies and His blame deforms. 4. Remembering the Hereafter: Recalling its bliss and the reward of the sincere, and that righteous deeds alone are the path to success therein. 5. Concealing Good Deeds: Striving to conceal acts of worship that Islam does not recommend publicizing, such as charity and supererogatory prayers. 6. Turning to Allah in Supplication: Frequently supplicating Allah to remove hypocrisy from the heart, such as the prayer: "O Allah, we seek refuge in You from knowingly associating anything with You, and we seek Your forgiveness for what we do not know." 7. Reading the Accounts of the Sincere: Learning about their lives inspires emulation and following in their footsteps.
