Do you consider yourself a hypocrite if you feel the performance of acts of worship and faith-filled emotions to be a burden after ceasing to commit sins?

We advise you to read extensively from books of encouragement and deterrence, to consistently perform the obligatory prayers, and to increase your supererogatory prayers and remembrance [of Allah], while being certain that Allah accepts repentance and righteous deeds if they are performed with sincerity. Fear of hypocrisy and showing off is praiseworthy if it incites sincerity and rectifies intentions, and does not lead to despair. As for feigned crying, there is no harm in it, and it is not considered hypocrisy. It should preferably be done in private to avoid showing off. Imam An-Nawawi said: “Crying during recitation is a characteristic of the gnostics and a distinguishing mark of Allah’s righteous servants.” It has been narrated from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him: “Recite the Qur’an and weep, and if you cannot weep, then feign weeping.”
