Is a person who commits sins—such as masturbation and raising one's voice at one's parents—considered a hypocrite, despite being affected and weeping upon hearing descriptions of the Prophet or the imam's recitation?

A Muslim's fear of falling into hypocrisy is evidence of the life of his heart and his eagerness for his faith. Indeed, prominent Companions and Tabi'un feared hypocrisy, which is the hypocrisy of actions that can lead to the hypocrisy of the heart, and this is what the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, warned against.

This intense fear of hypocrisy was due to the complete knowledge these imams had of their Lord and their fear of His station. They viewed a small sin as great, so they feared ostentation and shortcomings in their actions. They sometimes considered their engagement in permissible matters, even with humility in remembrance gatherings, as hypocrisy, such as the hadith of Hanzalah, who thought he had become a hypocrite because he felt tenderness of heart in the presence of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, but when he left, he busied himself with wives and children and forgot much. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, informed him that this was not hypocrisy.

The questioner should fear hypocrisy more than the saints, due to his disobedience to Allah by masturbating and his ill-treatment of his parents by raising his voice at them. Al-Bukhari titled a chapter on a believer's fear of his deeds being nullified, and he warned against persisting in hypocrisy and disobedience without repentance, because persistence in sins can strip away faith and lead to pure hypocrisy and a bad ending.

The questioner is advised to continue maintaining tenderness of heart and repenting from sins, to abandon masturbation, and to cease mistreating his parents, and to hasten in honoring them and being kind to them. For the fearful one is not he who wept, but rather he who abandoned the matter for which he feared being punished.
