Is it permissible to give charity (sadaqah) and zakat to an elderly, widowed woman to help her pay off a debt accumulated from a commercial agreement to replace her old house?

If a woman is indebted for permissible matters and does not possess the means to repay her debt, it is permissible to give her from zakat in her capacity as an indebted person (gharimah), unless she owns real estate exceeding her needs that can be sold to repay the debt. However, if her debt resulted from a contract to build a house with a merchant, and if the contract was specific and clear, then she owes no debt to the merchant and therefore is not entitled to zakat as an indebted person. But if the contract was invalid due to ambiguity (jahaalah), then the woman owes the merchant a fair rental value (ujrat al-mithl), and in this case, she is entitled to zakat if she does not have the means to repay this debt. Furthermore, the woman is entitled to zakat if she does not possess sufficient means for her basic needs, in her capacity as a poor person (faqirah).
