What is the ruling on playing "The Sims," a 3D game in which families are formed, houses are built, and characters move around?
We were appalled by what we saw in clips of this game – especially in its second and third editions – for there is no reprehensible or obscene act that is not found in it, such as music and dancing, immodesty and unveiling, drinking alcohol, complete nudity of men and women, illicit relationships between sexes, kissing and touching private parts, and even the complete act of fornication. All of this is under the pretext that it is animation, as if the viewer will not be affected by what he sees. And in the game "University Life," "Nightlife," and "New Year's Eve," there is dancing, singing, kissing, and illicit relationships, and "Santa Claus" appears to distribute gifts. This game depicts the nature of the dissolute Western family life, and it is intended to be the nature of the Muslim family life. The prohibition of looking at cartoon images that include nudity and indecency has already been explained. Accordingly: it is not permissible for a Muslim to download this game, nor to play it, nor is it permissible for him to enable anyone from his family to do so. And whoever does so will be betraying his flock for whom Allah Almighty has made him responsible.
