Is it permissible for a woman to wear men's concealing socks and wipe over them [for ablution], knowing that this might be considered imitating men?

Women are not permitted to wear socks designated for men, due to the established prohibition against women imitating men. As for wiping over socks that a woman is forbidden to wear, there is a difference of opinion among scholars, with the majority prohibiting it. The condition that the leather slipper (khuff) must be permissible to wear in order to wipe over it is the view of the Malikis and Hanbalis, and a counter-sound opinion among the Shafi'is, in contrast to the Hanafis and the sounder opinion among the Shafi'is.
