What is the ruling on the prayer of one who wipes over their socks, either by having their wife wipe for them, or by using a wet broom, or by spraying water on the top of the sock with a sprayer? And is it legislated to pour or spray water on the sock or Khuff (leather slipper) whether out of necessity or not?

It is permissible for a person to wipe over the khuff (leather socks) for another, or to help him perform ablution. It is not a condition that the wiping be done directly with the hand; rather, it is permissible with a wet cloth or a wet broom, and spraying water on the khuff with a sprayer is sufficient. The shoe that covers the ankles and was worn after a complete state of purity can be wiped over. Scholars differed regarding the permissibility of wiping over a shoe that does not cover the ankles. Some, like Al-Awza'i, Ibn Hazm, and Ibn Taymiyyah, held it permissible, citing hadiths from the Companions as evidence. As for the majority, some weakened these hadiths, while others interpreted them as referring to wiping over two jorabayn (socks) that have soles. It is permissible to wipe over jorabayn and sandals if they are worn together after purification. If wiping is permissible, then spraying or dripping water on the khuff is also permissible. As for pouring water, some jurists disliked it unless it does not damage the khuff.
