Is it permissible to sell old iron (some of which belongs to the questioner and some to former residents) found on the roof of a house he does not own?

If the items belonged to previous inhabitants who left them behind out of discard and disinterest, then there is no harm for the questioner in taking and selling them; because "what people cast off out of disinterest" becomes owned by taking.
