What is the ruling on marrying or selling and benefiting from a house, half of its value having been paid with haram money and the other half with halal money? Is it sufficient to determine the value of the haram amount to dispose of it later, or must the portion of the haram money that was used to pay for the house be disposed of? Is it permissible to dispose of this haram money as university installments, knowing that the young man has repented?
Unlawful wealth pertains to the liability of the earner, not to the specific asset in which it was spent. Therefore, there is no harm for the young man to benefit from the house into which some unlawful money was put. However, he must dispose of the amount of unlawful money by spending it on the welfare of Muslims or giving it to the poor and needy. It is not permissible for him to spend it on himself unless he is poor and in need of it to the extent of his need, as Imam Al-Nawawi said: "And he may give it in charity to himself and his dependents if he is poor."
