What is the ruling on selling a house I inherited that contains unlawfully acquired wealth, the proportion of which I am unaware, and donating the purchase price while benefiting from the remainder?
It is not obligatory to sell a house acquired with money deemed unlawful, as the unlawfulness is not inherent in the house itself. It is obligatory to dispose of unlawful money. If it rightfully belongs to someone else, it must be returned to them, or given in charity on their behalf if there is no hope of reaching them. If its source is an unlawful profession, it must be disposed of by spending it on the welfare of Muslims, not as charity. The questioner must strive to estimate the proportion of unlawful money and dispose of it. As for money whose source is doubtful, oscillating between lawful and unlawful, but without any sign of being unlawful, it is considered lawful by the consensus of scholars.
