If a man says to his wife, "You are divorced as by an oath of divorce," during her waiting period (iddah) after a previous pronouncement of divorce, does that count as one divorce or two?
If a husband divorces his wife with a revocable divorce, and a second divorce occurs before the expiration of her waiting period (iddah), then the second divorce takes effect. This is considered two consecutive divorces, and the woman builds her iddah for the second divorce upon what has passed of her iddah for the first divorce. She does not restart the iddah if there was no sexual intercourse or return (revocation) between the two divorces. However, if the second divorce occurs after her return from the first divorce, then she must restart the iddah anew, whether he had sexual intercourse with her or not. The questioner is advised to refer to the Sharia courts to adjudicate such matters.
