Is Zakat obligatory on olives, and what are the opinions and evidences of those who support and oppose it?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

Zakat is obligatory on olives according to the Hanafis and Malikis. This is also the view of Az-Zuhri, Al-Awza'i, Malik, Al-Layth, Ath-Thawri, Ash-Shafi'i in his old opinion, and one narration from Ahmad, based on the verse: "And give its due on the day of its harvest." (Quran 6:141). However, the Shafi'is in their new opinion and Ahmad in another narration hold that there is no zakat on it because it is not stored dry. The narrations reported from Ibn Abbas and Abu Bakr As-Siddiq concerning this are weak, and the default ruling is non-obligation unless a sound hadith is reported on the matter.
