What is the ruling on a son stealing from his father if the father does not provide him with money?
Theft is a reprehensible act, and its punishment in Islam is severe. A Muslim must distance himself from it. It is not permissible for a young man to take his father's money except with his knowledge and consent. If the theft occurred before puberty, there is no sin or legal punishment (hadd) upon the son, because the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "The pen has been lifted from three," and among them he mentioned, "and from the child until he reaches puberty." He is accountable for what he stole from his own money if he has any, otherwise it remains a debt upon him. However, if the thief is an adult, he is sinful and must repent and return the money. Yet, the legal punishment (hadd) is not applied to him for stealing his father's money due to the obligation of maintenance, inheritance, and his right to enter his father's house. All these are ambiguities that avert the hadd punishment from him.
