Is it permissible to combine two kinds of food in one meal, such as chicken and meat, as happens in wedding feasts?

It is permissible for a person to combine two different types of food (idamayn) in one meal, as no prohibition against this has been reported. However, some of the Salaf (early Muslims) disliked consistently combining two types of food, so that a person would not become accustomed to it, leading to extravagance or a lack of patience, and so that it would not cause excessive eating and induce sleep, and so that his desire for them would not diminish, and his life would not be wasted in acquiring them. Therefore, the Salaf's avoidance of this was out of an act of purification (tanzīh). Based on this, there is no objection to eating chicken and then meat, or other combinations.
