How many ghazwas did the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, participate in?

Many scholars differentiate between a Ghazwa (expedition) and a Sariyya (detachment). A Ghazwa is an expedition in which the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, participated himself, whether fighting occurred or not. A Sariyya is one in which the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, did not participate. Scholars have differed regarding the number of his expeditions, peace and blessings be upon him. The most accurate reports state that there were nineteen Ghazawat, and he personally fought in nine of them. His Saraya reached approximately seventy detachments.
