How many military expeditions and detachments did the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, undertake?

Zayd ibn Arqam narrated that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, undertook nineteen expeditions (ghazawat), participating in seventeen of them. The first of these was al-Usayra or al-Ashira. Biographers have mentioned other figures for the number of expeditions, ranging between twenty-five and twenty-nine. Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar reconciled these accounts by stating that those who mentioned the higher number counted each incident separately, while those who mentioned the lower number combined two closely related expeditions. As for the detachments (saraya), they were more numerous than the expeditions, their numbers ranging between forty and seventy. Al-Hafiz mentioned in Al-Fath that the total number of expeditions and detachments was one hundred.
