Is the supplication: "O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the misguiding trials (fitan)" an innovation, taking into consideration Al-Baghawi's interpretation of the Almighty's saying: "Indeed, your wealth and your children are but a trial, and Allah has with Him a great reward"?

Seeking refuge from misguiding trials (fitan) is legislated and not considered an innovation (bid'ah). In the hadith narrated by Zayd ibn Thabit, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Seek refuge with Allah from trials, both apparent and hidden." A supplication seeking refuge from misguiding trials has been reported in a hadith by Ahmad and others, but its chain of narration has been discussed and Al-Albani declared it weak. However, a group of scholars have conveyed from Ibn Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with him, a text explicitly stating the seeking of refuge from misguiding trials, and none of them denied it.
