Is it permissible for one seeking a fatwa to take the easier option if he doubts that he is afflicted with OCD, or fears its recurrence or onset, and is it permissible for him in these cases not to pay attention to doubts in many matters?
What an ordinary person should do when scholarly opinions differ has been explained in previous fatwas. It is permissible for him to follow the easiest opinions, unless he intends to seek out dispensations, and this is a view held by some scholars. The person afflicted with obsessive doubts (waswas) can take dispensations and adopt the easiest opinions until Allah cures him. And whoever's doubts have become frequent to the point of reaching waswas, he must disregard them and pay no attention to them. Previous fatwas have clarified the criterion for doubt that is considered waswas. There is no harm in adopting the easier opinion in these cases, and this is not part of theged blameworthy seeking out of dispensations.
