Why do some people speak of an infinite regress of events in the past, despite it contradicting the Qur’an, the Sunnah, and scholarly consensus, and despite the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) saying: "Allah was, and there was nothing else besides Him," and despite Ibn Hazm's consensus that Allah was eternally, and there was nothing with Him, then He created creation, and despite the scholars’ ruling that whoever asserts the pre-eternity of anything from the world or creation is a disbeliever?

The issue of the infinite regress of events is subtle and difficult to comprehend, and many have erred regarding it. It is incorrect to claim that proving the infinite regress of events in the past contradicts the Qur'an, the Sunnah, and scholarly consensus (Ijma'). The human mind is incapable of conceiving infinity, yet it is a reality. Ibn Taymiyyah's statement that eternity (al-azal) has no end clarifies this.

Confusing the type of events with their individual instances is one of the problems with this issue. Ahl al-Sunnah affirm the eternality of the type of speech (kalam) and creation (khalq) for Allah eternally, even if their individual instances are contingent, because His action, Exalted be He, is by "Be!" (kun). Thus, Allah, Exalted be He, has always been and continues to create things, one after another, just as He continues to create in Paradise.
