Are my feelings of asceticism and lack of ambition, my avoidance of financial risk-taking, my apprehension about the future, and my calculation of negative outcomes considered true asceticism, negativity, or pessimism, and what is the ruling on that?

Asceticism (Zuhd) is the emptying of the heart from attachment to that which is of no benefit in the Hereafter, and the removal of the worldly life from the heart, placing it in the hand to be spent in the way of Allah. It does not contradict striving to earn lawful money. Praiseworthy contentment means being satisfied with what Allah has apportioned and restraining oneself from coveting what others possess; it is not laziness or weakness of resolve. Rather, a Muslim should be high-spirited and strive for the best through lawful means. A Muslim should seek the good of both this world and the Hereafter, as stated in the Qur'an and Sunnah. As for the supplication, "O Allah, I do not ask You to avert Your decree," it should not be said, because it does not include the desire and insistence required in supplication.
