What should I do to perform the night prayer (Qiyam al-layl)?

Qiyam al-Layl (night vigil prayer) is the practice of prophets and righteous people, and its virtue is immense. Among the things that help in performing it are sincerity to Allah, seeking His pleasure out of desire for His reward and fear of His punishment, and seeking help from those who can assist in its performance, such as a wife, provided there is no fear of showing off, or setting an alarm.
