Is it permissible for men to use the tambourine (duff) or not, given the conflicting fatwas regarding its permissibility?

There is a difference of opinion among scholars regarding the ruling on playing the daff (tambourine) for men. Most of them permit it, and this is closer to the correct view, due to the generality of the hadith: "The distinction between lawful and unlawful is the sound and the beating of the daff." However, despite the preponderant view being permissibility, a Muslim should not excessively play the daff or listen to it.
