What is the ruling on listening to the daff (tambourine-like instrument) at school and home parties?

The Shari'ah permits the use of the 'duff' (tambourine) in weddings and on the two Eids, and this is specific to women according to the preponderant opinion among scholars. As for the hadiths cited to argue that the use of the 'duff' is not exclusive to women, they are weak. Scholars have differed regarding the use of the 'duff' on other occasions, but it appears permissible for women on other occasions as well, as in the hadith (definition) of Buraydah's slave girl, whom the Prophet (peace be upon him) permitted to play the 'duff'; in it, he said: "If you have vowed, then do so; otherwise, do not." Therefore, there is no harm in using the 'duff' occasionally in school or home parties, especially among women.
