The report narrated by Abu Nu'aym about Amr ibn al-Aas's attempt to give money to Abdullah ibn Umar to relinquish the caliphate—its narrators are trustworthy, except for Abu Nu'aym's shaykh. And assuming its authenticity, Amr ibn al-Aas clarified that it was to test Ibn Umar's eagerness for the caliphate, and Ibn Umar denounced and rejected the matter. Amr was known only for advising Muslims, and he strived in that regard. He and others like him among the Companions are excused for anything that might have emanated from them; they are the best generations, and their sins are forgiven by their precedence and good deeds. The duty is to refrain from delving into what transpired between them and to have a good opinion of them.
