Is the story of Umar ibn al-Khattab with the Jewish beggar true, in which he gave him from the Muslims' treasury after saying: "By Allah, we have not been fair to you if we take from you in your youth and then abandon you in your old age"?

The aforementioned narration was reported by Abu Ubayd al-Qasim bin Salam and Ibn Zanjawayh, and it was transmitted by many scholars such as Al-Suyuti, Ibn Al-Qayyim, and the author of Kanz Al-Ummal. No one has spoken about its chain of transmission (sanad), but the mention of it by these verifying scholars, their citing it as evidence, and their basing rulings upon it indicate that it has a sound origin.
