What is the ruling on leading a rugged life, and is the hadith attributed to Omar, may Allah be pleased with him: "Lead a rugged life, for blessings do not last," authentic? Is one rewarded for it? Did the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, do it? And what is better for the rich: asceticism or enjoying what Allah has bestowed upon them?

The statement attributed to Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding the meaning of "Tam'addadu" (become like Ma'add) is not authentic. It is permissible to enjoy the blessings that Allah has made lawful. A Muslim is rewarded if they abandon luxury and indulgence in clothing, food, and dwelling out of humility and asceticism, following the example of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), who used to sleep on a mat, and two months or more would pass without a fire being lit in his house. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Indeed, humility (in appearance) is from faith," meaning having a simple appearance and abandoning luxury, preferring anonymity among people. His intention was humility, asceticism, and curbing arrogance. He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) also said to Mu'adh ibn Jabal: "Beware of indulgence, for the servants of Allah are not indulgent."
