How can we reconcile asceticism in this worldly life with the Prophet's saying, may Allah bless him and grant him peace: "Indeed, Allah loves to see the اثر of His bounty upon His servant," especially considering that Abu Bakr wore patched garments, and Umar and his son could not afford a new garment?

If Allah bestows a blessing upon a servant and its effects are not apparent on him, then this is either blameworthy stinginess or praiseworthy humility and asceticism. The general principle is moderation in all matters.

'Badhadhah' (austerity and plainness in clothing) is part of faith, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) praised it, just as he praised those who abandon luxurious clothing out of humility before Allah. Conversely, one who abandons good clothing out of stinginess or to conceal Allah's blessings is blameworthy, for Allah loves to see the effects of His blessings on His servant.

Scholars have reconciled these two matters by advocating moderation: neither extravagance nor miserliness. Praiseworthy clothing is that which is above 'badhadhah' but does not lead one to the highest levels of attire. Al-Tahawi mentioned that the praiseworthy 'badhadhah' is that which does not reach the extreme level of 'badhadhah' that conceals the blessing of the Bestower.

Some scholars also held the view that humility in dress is desirable during times of hardship and need, so as not to break the hearts of the poor. Ibn Uthaymeen opined that demonstrating the effect of a blessing varies according to the blessing itself. The blessing of wealth is shown through charity and benefiting people, and by wearing what is appropriate without extravagance or affectation, or by wearing the clothing of the poor if it serves a purpose or considers their feelings.

True asceticism is for the heart to be free from what is of no benefit in the afterlife, and for a person not to grieve over what they have missed nor rejoice over what they have been given, in accordance with His (the Almighty’s) saying: "So that you do not grieve over what has escaped you, nor rejoice over what He has given you."
