Is a woman required to wear socks during prayer?

Scholars have differed regarding the obligation for a woman to cover her feet in prayer. The majority of scholars (Malikis, Shafi'is, and Hanbalis) are of the opinion that it is obligatory, citing the hadith of Umm Salamah, in which the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "If the shield (garment) is ample, covering the tops of her feet." The Hanafis, however, are of the opinion that it is not obligatory, drawing an analogy to the face, and because she is tested by the necessity of revealing her feet when walking, and because they are not a place of apparent adornment. The preponderant opinion is that of the majority, due to the explicit hadith.
