Is it permissible to dye hair with multiple colors, or must it be with a single color?

Changing gray hair with a color other than black is recommended, based on what Muslim narrated from Jabir ibn Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both), that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Change this (gray hair) with something, but avoid black." The Prophet (peace and and blessings of Allah be upon him) did not forbid colors other than black. We have not found in the words of the scholars any obligation to restrict dyeing to a single color, so it remains permissible, unless it involves imitating disbelievers, or men imitating women or vice-versa, or imitating those who commit immorality. The best is to restrict oneself to henna or katam. The narrations regarding dyeing apply primarily to gray hair, but other hair can be analogously permitted.
