What is the ruling for someone who had intercourse with his wife during the daytime in Ramadan, then stopped before ejaculation, thinking that this does not invalidate the fast, and repeated the act on several days? Is there an expiation of 60 days for each day, or a single expiation? Do excuses such as travel and illness interrupt the consecutive days of expiation?

For someone who engaged in sexual intercourse during the daytime in Ramadan (definition) while being unaware that this act invalidates the fast, there is, according to the preponderant opinion, no requirement for a make-up fast (qada') nor an expiation (kaffarah (definition)). This is because an ignorant person is excused if the religious ruling has not reached them. This is supported by the verse: (And there is no blame upon you for that in which you have erred, but [there is blame for] what your hearts intended.) Many scholars have favored this view, among them العلامة العثيمين (Allamah Al-Uthaymeen). However, the well-known position of the Hanbali school is that expiation is obligatory even for the ignorant and the forgetful. A Muslim should strive to learn the rulings of the Sacred Law to avoid falling into error.
