How can a girl balance obeying her parents and her desire to have an Islamic wedding free of musical instruments and intermixing, taking into account her parents' rejection of that desire?
Parents are obligated to hasten their daughter's marriage if a suitable suitor proposes, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "If someone whose character and religious commitment you are pleased with comes to you, then marry him. If you do not do so, there will be tribulation on earth and widespread corruption." Therefore, parents delaying their daughter's marriage for forbidden reasons is wrong and unjust. However, this does not permit mistreating them or failing in their dutifulness. It is not permissible to obey them in matters that involve disobedience [to Allah], such as holding a wedding ceremony where unrelated men and women mix, or where the bride displays her adornments to unrelated men, with the presence of forbidden dancing and singing.
Therefore, it is advisable not to miss the opportunity to marry the religious young man, and to strive to convince your parents to abandon forbidden practices, using politeness, gentleness, and patience, and seeking help from religious relatives. If they insist and these methods do not work, then there is no objection for you to leave them after the marriage contract and go with your husband, or to stay at home without committing forbidden acts, while trying to please them and treat them kindly later on. "And whoever relies upon Allah – He is sufficient for him."
