What is the ruling on eating crocodiles and hyenas, even though the latter is a predatory animal with fangs?
Scholars have differed regarding the ruling on eating crocodiles. The majority are of the opinion that it is forbidden, while the Malikis permit it, and this is also a narration from Ahmad.
Those who permit it cite the Almighty's saying: ﴿Lawful to you is game from the sea and its food﴾ (Al-Ma'idah/96), and the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) saying regarding the sea: "Its water is purifying, and its dead (creatures) are lawful."
The Permanent Committee for Issuing Fatwas and Sheikh Ibn 'Uthaymeen have favored the permissibility of eating crocodiles, emphasizing that the default ruling for sea animals is permissibility, and the presence of fangs in it does not exclude it from this principle.
As for the hyena, many scholars have permitted eating it, and this is the doctrine of the Shafi'is and Hanbalis, who supported their view with authentic and explicit proofs.
