How is the body of a woman of unknown lineage and religion dealt with?

If a body is found and the religion of its owner is unknown, signs such as appearance, clothing, and belongings are considered. If these indicate that the person was a Muslim, they are treated as a Muslim. If no signs are apparent, they are treated according to the land in which they were found. If found in a land where Muslims are numerous, they are treated as Muslims, and if found in a land where disbelievers are numerous, they are treated as disbelievers. Ibn Qudamah holds that if found in Dar al-Islam (the Abode of Islam), the body should be washed and prayed over. If found in Dar al-Kufr (the Abode of Disbelief), it should not be washed or prayed over, based on the principle that whoever is in a land is considered to be from its people. The Kuwaiti Fiqh Encyclopedia elaborates that if the body bears the distinguishing marks of Muslims, it should be washed and prayed over. If it does not bear such marks and is found in Dar al-Islam, it should be washed. If found in Dar al-Harb (the Abode of War), it should not be washed.
