Is it permissible to craft chess pieces, which sometimes take the form of statues for the king, queen, and rook, knowing that they are for playing and not for worship?

The creation and drawing of animate beings are forbidden by scholarly consensus, with the exception of children's toys. Scholars have cited as evidence for this the hadith of Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "The people who will be most severely punished on the Day of Resurrection are those who imitate Allah's creation." Among the other evidences is the hadith of Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Allah Almighty said: "And who is more unjust than one who goes about creating a creation like My creation? Let them create an atom, or let them create a grain, or let them create a barley-corn." And the hadith of Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with both of them, that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Every maker of images will be in the Fire, and for every image he made, a soul will be created for him to punish him in Hell." All of this includes the making of chess pieces. In fact, the making of chess pieces is a means of promoting playing chess, which is forbidden in some cases and strongly disliked in other cases. This falls under the general meaning of His Almighty's saying: "And do not cooperate in sin and aggression" [Al-Ma'idah: 2].
