Is it permissible for a man to make the financial support of his married son a part of his zakat?

The father is not obligated to financially support his adult, self-sufficient son. Scholars differ regarding the permissibility of giving zakat to ascendants (parents, grandparents) and descendants (children, grandchildren) whom the zakat giver is not obligated to support:

- First View (Hanafis and Hanbalis): It is absolutely impermissible, whether financial support is obligatory or not.

- Second View (Malikis, Shafi'is, and some Hanbalis – chosen by Sheikh al-Islam): It is permissible if financial support is not obligatory for the zakat giver, because the impediment to giving (zakat) is the obligation of financial support. If the obligation of financial support is lifted, then giving (zakat) becomes permissible, just as it would be for a stranger.
