How is the Eid prayer performed?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

The Eid prayer consists of two rak'ahs, beginning after the sun has risen to the height of a spear (when its redness has disappeared) and ending at the zenith of the sun.

Its form is as follows: In the first rak'ah, one says seven takbirs in addition to the takbirat al-ihram, and recites after Al-Fatihah, Surat Al-A'la or Surat Qaf. In the second rak'ah, one says five takbirs in addition to the takbirat al-ihram, and recites Surat Al-Ghashiyah or Surat Al-Qamar. After the prayer, the imam delivers a sermon. The evidence for this is the hadith agreed upon by Al-Bukhari and Muslim, narrated by Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri.
