It is permissible to wear the two socks (khuffayn) two hours or more after performing ablution, and then to wipe over them during the next ablution, provided they were put on while in a state of ritual purity. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said to al-Mughirah: "Leave them, for I inserted my feet into them while they were pure." Wiping over the khuffayn is established and has been transmitted through multiple, independent chains of narration. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, wiped over them both when resident and when traveling. He set a time limit of one day and one night for the resident, and three days and three nights for the traveler. He used to wipe over the tops of the khuffayn, and he also wiped over socks and sandals.
