Is it permissible to perform ablution while wearing socks?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

If a Muslim puts on his socks after performing ablution, he is permitted to wipe over them for one day and one night if he is a resident, and for three days and nights if he is a traveler. He is not required to remove them unless the period expires or he becomes obligated to perform the major ritual bath (ghusl), such as due to janabah (major ritual impurity). This ruling is based on the action of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) who wiped over his socks and sandals, and on the statements of many scholars.
